George William McDaniel

George William McDaniel is Professor of History at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. A native of Washington, Iowa, he did undergraduate work at the University of Iowa and graduated from St. Ambrose. He did theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology in Dubuque and the Catholic University of America. In 1970 he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Davenport. He took an MA and a PhD in history from the University of Iowa.

He has published a number of articles in the Annals of Iowa and The Palimpsest, both publications of the State Historical Society of Iowa. His article, "Catholic Action in Davenport: St. Ambrose College and the League for Social Justice," published in the Summer, 1996 issue of the Annals of Iowa, received the Throne/Aldrich Award of the State Historical Society of Iowa. His book, Smith Wildman Brookhart: Iowa’s Renegade Republican, was awarded the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award by the State Historical Society of Iowa. He is currently at work on a history of St. Ambrose University to be published in conjunction with the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the university in 2007.

He served on the Board of Trustees of the State Historical Society of Iowa and was president of the Society. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association and is chair of the Travel Grants and Book Award Committee. He is a former president and now is secretary of The Contemporary Club, a literary society founded in 1896.
